Post Hill Series – Part 2 – ‘The route with the pub’

Another day, another walk through Post Hill but this time we are finishing at a pub and don’t the best walks always end with a drink!?

The pub at the end of this route is The Beulah, a dog-friendly pub serving food and popular with hikers. I visited here a few years ago for Sunday roast, you can read my post here.

It is worth bearing in mind that there are multiple ways to reach The Beulah from Post Hill but today I will focus on only one of them. This is a simple route with a steep incline. As this pub is located uphill I’m afraid there is no way of reaching it without some climbing!

This route starts from the Wood Lane entrance to Post Hill close to Wickes roundabout. There is a small car park here or it is easily reachable from the number 4 bus stop.

Enter through the gate and head straight up the path past the Post Hill signpost. You’ll continue along this path for the majority of the walk so it’s a very easy route to follow.

This path can get extremely muddy if it has been raining so definitely whack those wellies on! The photographs here were taken on a dry day without rain for a few days but there was still mud.

After walking for about ten minutes you will come to a crossroads. Carry on straight towards the open field. You will have an option to veer left and head uphill or veer right and head downhill but you will need to stay on the straight path for this route.

Eventually you will see a bench on your right, it’s here that you need to follow the path round to the left to continue.

Walking along this path you will come to another sign showing you that you’re midway through Post Hill.

It’s hard to tell from the photographs I have taken but this walk is quite high up. It provides a beautiful view down to the beck below too.

Continuing downhill slightly you will eventually reach an open field. A great stopping point for a rest or a chance to let your dog have a run around if they don’t run away off lead like my dog would!

You may notice to your left an extremely steep incline. Don’t worry – You won’t be going up this! This is well known amongst runners as it is frequently used as a challenge for locals to run up.

To ensure you don’t miss the route you need to take, look out for the bench that overlooks the field. Straight after the bench you need to take a sharp left up the dusty path through the trees.

It won’t be immediately obvious so make sure you don’t miss the path. You should notice you are on it because it will be a steady incline.

As you walk up higher you’ll get a beautiful view of Post Hill, the beck and some of Pudsey/Troydale in the distance.

Keep going up until you reach the top that starts to veer right.

Continue on straight and ensure you don’t take any paths that take you downhill as it will start taking you back down to the bottom of Post Hill. You just need to make sure you continue to stay up high for this one. Stick to the left if you are faced with any options.

Finally you’ll reach the edge of Post Hill. If you’re walking in spring you’ll be faced with lots of lovely garlic nice and green.

You’ll know you’ve reached the end because you’ll find another signpost showing your location.

To the left of the sign there is a footpath that takes you directly up to The Beulah. It is next to private land so please be careful of the electric fence that runs alongside this path!

Finally you’ve made it to The Beulah! Enjoy a drink and maybe even a cheeky spot of grub – You’ve earned it!

On the way back you will need to return via the public footpath again. You can follow the same route back or alternatively you can walk straight to the bottom of Post Hill. To do this you want to walk down the hill to the left of the sign. You can then walk alongside the beck back to the entrance you started at.

  1. What a fantastic guide! I love how you’ve detailed every turn and included practical advice (like bringing wellies for muddy days!). The idea of ending the hike at a cozy pub like The Beulah sounds like the perfect treat after a long walk. Thanks for sharing such a thorough and engaging route.
