Hidden treasure at Oulton Broad, Suffolk

This Easter we had a little caravan holiday down in Kessingland Beach. We’d already visited Halesworth, Lowestoft and Southwold during the week and needed one more destination for our final day.

The weather started off lovely and warm but quickly turned into grey skies and drizzle so we decided to stay local to Kessingland and head somewhere new. Next stop, Oulton Broad.

I’ve been here before because my Aunty and Uncle used to live here. I remember there being a harbour so I thought it might be a nice spot to walk around for a couple of hours.

We parked up at the side of the road taking advantage of the free parking before summer tariffs kick in on 1st May. One of the few perks of visiting outside of peak season!

We had no plan but were greeted by a selection of pubs in every direction and spoilt for choice on where we might take a refreshment break. Especially since our little one was fast asleep and we didn’t want to wake her up by forcing her to walk around the park just yet!

We headed over the harbour bridge and across to The Wherry Hotel where I tried to enjoy my favourite cocktail. Sadly it wasn’t anywhere near as good as the one I had two days prior at the amazing Fox Inn in Darsham. So we sipped up and moved on after a few cuddles from our sleepy toddler.

After our quick stop, we headed for the park. We spotted this when we parked up and it looked like a nice green space right by the waterfront.

Oulton Broad seems like a nice area with pretty scenery. We wandered around the park for a little while only wishing it was a little sunnier!

We’d found ourselves in Nicholas Everitt Park surrounded by water and swans. I even stumbled upon Lowestoft Museum – A lovely looking building that I didn’t get chance to visit as it was closed. Lowestoft Museum is free entry and i’d be interested to see what was in there given I have never found Lowestoft too appealing personally.

After we finished at the harbour we headed back towards the car. A plaque caught my attention as the title interested me. It said “Banksy Viewing Platform”. As we couldn’t see anything because the plaque was on the bridge I decided to investigate. Heading away from the bridge and looking back towards it on the other side of the plaque it was exactly what I’d hoped it was. A real Banksy! If you have never heard of Banksy you must be living under a rock but over in Yorkshire this isn’t something you come across every day. In fact in all my travels i’ve never seen any of Banksy’s artwork in person.

I was really chuffed with this unexpected find! I wonder how many people walk straight past this without stopping to read it or even notice it is there.

Whilst we didn’t do a whole lot in Oulton Broad, it was well worth the visit even if just for this hidden gem.

We enjoyed our time here and I think on a sunny day it would be a lovely walk around the harbour. The park was large and there were loads of cafes and pubs on offer too. Always a good reason to return!
