Thomas Cook was an iconic figure when it comes to tourism. He was one of the first to establish what we now know as package holidays.
Everyone in the UK must have heard of Thomas Cook at some point. There will even be people all over the world familiar with his name too.
If you’ve been following the news you’ll know that this week we saw the collapse of Thomas Cook’s business.
He had stores all around the country filled with travel agents doing business with people around the world. There were Thomas Cook flights, tours, books.. All sorts!
The impact on the tourism industry has been a big one this week.
If you work in travel like I do you’ll no doubt have been affected. Work this week has been crazy trying to deal with the aftermath.
What is awful though is the amount of people that are now out of a job. I really feel for these guys.
This week I have spent a lot of time helping brides replan their weddings abroad, some of them with weddings early as next week! I’ve had customers desperate to find something new and others that I just simply couldn’t help. It’s been a very different week in the industry.
Then there are those that are stranded still abroad trying to get home. The knock on effect throughout business in tourism has been a big one. With such a large company collapsing and brexit on it’s way, it’s hard to say what the future of tourism will bring.
One thing is for sure, we will never stop travelling. Us Brits love our holidays too much!
So thank you Thomas Cook for starting something epic. I’ve been on a few holidays with the company and will sure go on a few more package holidays in the future elsewhere.
Best of luck to all those who have been impacted by the recent events, I’m sure everything will turn out well in the end 🙂
What a lovely post – I remember being little and going on Thomas Cook holidays with my parents! Happy memories

Shocking really as Thomas Cook were one of the mainstays of package trips weren’t they? Most people must have been on one of their holidays at some stage. At least they are successfully getting the stranded people home now.
