We have finally reached the age of hiking! My little one turns 3 this summer and she loves to go walking. She even has her own pair of hiking boots! (Admittedly she’s not quite grown into them yet).
We’ve held back on hiking with her for quite some time as she really is tiny. She is at the bottom of the centile chart for height at just 0.4th but that’s not stopped her! From the moment she took her first steps on her 1st birthday she’s never stopped keeping me on my toes.

So, now that she’s a little bigger and the days are getting longer we’ve started to get out and about. The weather isn’t helping since I don’t think it’s stopped raining since 2025 but we are not letting that stop us!
We have the Osprey backpack that I highly recommend as it has worked wonders for us. It’s a great piece of kit that works as back-up when those little legs get tired.

A couple of weeks ago we decided to head out into Post Hill and she walked for 2km before we decided the sinking mud was too much of a challenge. We trekked all the way through Fulneck Valley stretching nearly 9km and I don’t doubt she’d have tried walk it all if we let her!

I love being outdoors with my daughter. I remember walking Ilkley Moor frequently as a kid and I always had* little legs too but it didn’t stop me (*still do!).

I want to encourage my daughter that being out in nature is the best activity for so many reasons. It does wonders for your mental health, physical health and best of all – it’s free!
I hope she grows up with the same appreciation I have for the great outdoors but even if she doesn’t, we can enjoy it whilst we have the opportunity.

So, I am looking for your suggestions on the best walks in Yorkshire! We are exploring the local area little by little with our little one and we want the best walks for little legs!
It’s easy to go on a ten mile hike wherever you fancy. But, have you ever tried to take a toddler on a safe walk that doesn’t involve dodging busy roads, avoiding falling from height or in water. It’s a whole other mission! If you’ve gone on a great walk recently that you think would be perfect for a mini me, please drop me a comment and be a part of our next adventure.
