Exploring Mdina AKA Kings Landing

Sometimes I’ve deliberately gone out of my way to visit a movie set but more often than not I’ve found myself wondering why something looks so familiar then suddenly I’ve realised I’ve been here before only via a TV show!

So let’s start with my favourite wow moment… Game of Thrones.

It was a casual weekend trip with my dad to Malta and being a lover of walking, castles and general old medieval spots we decided we’d take a wander to Mdina. Just a short bus journey from where we were staying in St Julian’s we made the day trip.

It was absolutely beautiful and one of the highlights of the trip. Extremely quiet with barely any tourists around in winter it was so peaceful. It wasn’t until I returned back to England and looked at my photos that I started to think, this place seems really familiar to me..

The walled city of Mdina doubled up as King’s Landing, the island’s forts served as the Red Keep, and the stunning natural arch known as the Azure Window in Gozo was the setting for Khal Drogo and Daenerys Targaryen’s wedding.

Quite a few hours my dad and I wandered the streets completely oblivious to the fact this is where Jaime Lannister and Ned Stark fought and Joffrey took Sansa to see her father and her septa’s head on a spike. We can’t have been the only ones oblivious as judging by how quiet the destination was I imagine a trip to Mdina now will be quite a popular one heaving with fans of the ever so popular TV series!

In only three weeks i’m scooting off to Dubrovnik, Croatia. HBO replaced Mdina with Dubrovnik for the iconic King’s Landing so I expect it to be rather crowded but picturesque I’m sure.

I’ll post about this next month when I return so stay tuned to hear my comparison!
